Joram Van Klaveren: From Anti-Islam Politician to Proud Muslim

Today, we share the remarkable story of Joram Van Klaveren, a former Dutch politician who spent years campaigning against Islam, only to embrace the faith he once opposed. His journey is a powerful reminder of Allah’s guidance and the transformative power of truth.
A Politician Against Islam
Joram Van Klaveren was a prominent member of Geert Wilders’ anti-Islamic Freedom Party (PVV) from 2010 to 2014. During his time in politics, he vehemently criticized Islam, calling it “a lie” and labeling the Quran as “poison.” His rhetoric reflected the party’s agenda to associate Islam with negativity and division.
However, Van Klaveren’s perspective began to shift after he left the PVV in 2014, following Geert Wilders’ racist remarks about Moroccans. He later founded his own party but stepped away from politics in 2017 after failing to secure a seat in the national elections.
A Change of Heart
Van Klaveren’s journey to Islam began unexpectedly while he was writing a book intended to criticize the religion. As he delved deeper into his research, he encountered truths about Islam that challenged his preconceived notions.
In an interview with Dutch Radio, he explained, “During that writing, I came across more and more things that made my view on Islam falter.” This intellectual and spiritual exploration led him to question his past beliefs and ultimately accept Islam in October 2021.
A Public Declaration
Van Klaveren publicly announced his conversion earlier this week, expressing remorse for his previous statements. He admitted, “I was simply wrong,” and acknowledged that his past views were shaped by the PVV’s anti-Islam agenda. His honesty and courage in confronting his past have inspired many, both within and outside the Muslim community.
A Precedent of Transformation
Van Klaveren is not the first former PVV member to embrace Islam. Arnoud Van Doorn, another ex-PVV official, converted to Islam in April 2013 after visiting a mosque and experiencing the warmth and kindness of the Muslim community. Van Doorn, who once produced an anti-Islamic documentary, later performed Hajj and became an advocate for Islam.
Upon hearing of Van Klaveren’s conversion, Van Doorn congratulated him on Twitter and even offered him a free trip to Umrah. Their stories exemplify the Quranic verse:
“Perhaps Allah will put, between you and those to whom you have been enemies among them, affection. And Allah is competent, and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Quran 60:7)
